I lead a team of seven data and AI engineers at a 3,500-person global manufacturer. Before that I was the lead data engineer on a statewide utility data platform, an analytics engineer at a public utility, and - for eight years - a data engineer, product manager, and data platform lead at a youth-sports SaaS.
What I write here are field notes: retrospectives on the platform, governance, cost, and leadership work from those roles, each labeled with the period it covers. The work timeline lists each role and links to the field notes covering that period. The about page is the long version of the résumé. The now page lists what I’m focused on this month.

Causal business models, or what to build once the whole business is in one data lake
Imagine you are handed the annual plan. It has a revenue number in it, a margin number, an operating expense number - the figures that FP&A and the leadership team have agreed the company will deliver. Now imagine you are a supply chain manager, or the sales leader for one region, or the person who runs the loyalty program. Which of those numbers is yours? None of them, exactly. You can’t move revenue. You can move the things that move revenue, if somebody would tell you which things those are and by how much.

Advent of Code, 2022
I am participating in the Advent of Code this year, and I encourage you to do the same! I’ve chosen the Python scripting language this year. In the past two years, I’ve attempted the challenges using only SQL which made it….interesting.
The challenges are suited more for a traditional programming language, but attempting to use SQL (via BigQuery) was a helpful mental exercise. It encourages thinking about the problem through a lens of the data, rather than the traditional instinct of developers who may be more inclined to think about “iterators” and “conditionals”.
